Middle East Markets
The countries of the Middle East are extremely different from one another, from the crops they grow to the regulations that guide them. While Egypt has found a way to turn the desert into cropland, Morocco loses around 22,000 hectares of arable land to desert every year, according to Abdeladim El Hafi, Morroco’s high commissioner for water and forests. In fact, the aridity of the land is the one commonality between the countries; only a few, like Egypt and Pakistan, have strong irrigation systems — the others must depend on scarce rainwater.
Tariff rates also differ from country to country, but bilateral free trade areas that will remove import barriers between the Mideast States and the EU by 2010 are in the planning stages. Agricultural goods that do not meet the free trade conditions will still receive reduced tariffs.
Each Mideast State has its own individual agricultural culture, but as a whole, the four states covered in this issue — Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey — grow a high concentration of fruits and vegetables, which contribute an important percentage of their GDP.
