Ukraine’s Sugar Beet Production Increases 30 Percent
The sugar industry in the Ukraine will see an increase this year after farmer’s experienced a plentiful sugar beet harvest.
Sugar refining in the country is expected to increase 30 percent to about 2 million tons compared to 1.55 million tons produced in 2010. Ukrainian farmers will produce about 16 million tons of sugar beets in 2011, said Agriculture Minister Mykola Prysyazhnyuk.
The Ukraine Ministry of Agrarian Policy has been providing subsidies to sugar beet producers at $500 per hectare. Through this program, more than 1,000 farmers have received $200 million in funding, according to Prysyazhnyuk. In addition, refining factories have had greater access to loans to assist with operational expenses and construction of new facilities.
